Carolina Lupine

Thermopsis caroliniana -Full Sun to light shade–  Showy yellow lupine-like flowers. NA Native, nitrogen fixing, 3-5′ tall, similar to Baptisia but earlier blooming.

Showy yellow flowers cover this native perenial lugume in early spring, followed by ornamental black bean pods. Not technically a lupine despite the common name – it is not edible, but not poisonous like lupines. Vigorous grower once established, reaches 3-5′ tall and has potential as a nitrogen contributing “chop and drop” plant.
