Virginia-native  Wild Strawberry

(Fragaria virginiana) -Full Sun to Full Shade–  Fast growing groundcover with nickle-sized berries

This is a delightful, shade-tolerant, extra low-growing strawberry that readily fills the role of quick-growing groundcover in landscape beds.  It will weave around and through taller elements in your beds and cover the soil to prevent weeds from coming up.  Less susceptible to “overcrowding” die-out that commercial strawberries have after 5 or 6 years.  Pretty white flowers cover the mat of leaves in the spring, and are followed by delicious little red berries with a unique “waffled” texture.  Not as small as you might think, about the size of a nickel.  Self-fertile.

Jewel standard Strawberry

(Fragaria vesca) -Full Sun–  midseason ripening, excellent flavor

late season.  Jewel remains a favorite late variety with many commercial growers and backyard growers alike.  It holds consistent size over the season, has beautiful red color, excellent flavor, and is resistant to many of the common strawberry diseases.  Larger berries than ‘Earliglow’.

Mignonette Alpine Strawberry

(Fragaria vesca) -Full Sun to Full Shade–  everbearing, small red intense flavored berries to 1″ long, does not runner, attractive bedding plant

This French delicacy is a lovely bedding plant in addition to its super sweet and unique flavored berries. Fruits are often up to 1″ long in the spring when the plants put on their heaviest crop, and they continue to produce throughout the summer, although fruits will be smaller and less abundant in hot dry conditions. Unlike conventional ever-bearing strawberries, alpine strawberries do not send out runners, but slowly clump out from the base of the plant, and they remain attractive throughout the summer, making them more practical for landscape beds.  They will often self-seed new plants nearby that you can use to expand your planting.

Earliglow standard Strawberry

(Fragaria vesca) -Full Sun–  disease resistant, earliest ripening, excellent flavor

early season.  A truly time-tested variety, Earliglow is still the earliest-ripening strawberry and has some of the best flavor of all commercial varieties.  Beautiful red color and shiny skin.  It is resistant to most of the common diseases affecting strawberries.  It’s only downside is that the berries drop in size towards the later half of the season.
