Big Fattie’ Thornless seedling Honey Locust

(Gleditsia triacanthos) -Full Sun to part shade–  Small % may develop thorns. Fast growing, tall, spreading trees make nice shade trees. Selected for fatter seedpods which make good livestock feed.

Seedlings from thornless parent trees with fatter pods.  There is a small chance that some may develop thorns as they get older.  Fast growing, tall and spreading trees create dappled rather than deep shade.  Can take a variety of soil types, known for being able to grow in polluted, compacted urban soils.  Pods are an excellent livestock feed (nutritionally equivalent to barley grain by sheep and goats) and the pulp is a sugary “nibble” for people too.  Lumber has some rot resistance and is a beautiful honey-red/orange color.  We might have some thorny individuals available if you prefer a tree that protects itself from varmints.

Geneva Long American Persimmon

-Full Sun to Part Sun–  Full size on Seedling Rootstock, 35-60′ tall

Sources disagree whether this is a pure American Persimmon or possibly an American/Asian cross, but its form is completely American.  It bears large, less-astringent fruit that has a unique elongated shape – about the size and shape of an egg.  Good texture, more firm when ripe than wild persimmons. 35-60′ tall. Zones 3-9

Semi-erect, but best grown on a trellis.  One of the largest fruited blackberries available, good sweetness and small seed size (for a blackberry). Early season, about 2 weeks earlier than Triple Crown.  Blackberries do well in almost any soil in our region.   Space 3’ apart in row.  Self fertile.

Triple Crown Thornless Blackberry

(Rubus fruticosus) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  Sweet, Trailing type, extremely vigorous

Trailing type, needs trellis. Our most productive (per plant) of the sweet thornless types. Large berries, fast growth, smaller seeds.   Blackberries will tip root and give you many more plants if you fail to tie them to the trellis.  Canes can grow 10’ or more but best to tip them at 4′-7′.   Blooms very late so avoids the occasional freezes that can hurt the blossoms of earlier blackberries.  Blackberries do well in almost any soil in our region.  Mid to late-season ripening.   Space 5’ apart in row.  Self fertile.

Amorpha False Indigo Bush

(Amorpha fruiticosa) -Full to Part Sun–  Native nitrogen fixing shrub up to 18′ tall, but can be coppiced

Amorpha fruiticosa is an attractive native wildflower shrub. It is a legume, and is often used in permaculture plantings as a nitrogen fixer – usually with the plan to coppice the bush (“chop & drop”) because it will reach a fairly substantial size if not chopped down frequently. 15-18′ tall and spreading up to twice that width. NOT edible, it’s practical benefits are mostly beauty, nitrogen fixing and soil stabilization, and it also has some potential as a natural insecticide. Fast growing, thornless.
