Viola’s Lavender Mulberry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Full size on seedling rootstock, space 15′-25′ apart, self fertile

This tree claims its parentage from Southern Indiana wild-growing mulberries.  The earliest fruiting of the trees we have producing right now.  Great producer of sweet but flavorful dark lavender fruit.  Juice is less-staining than black fruited mulberries, but not completely clear.  Has a more berry-like flavor than your typical non-staining white or lavender fruit (which tend to be very sweet but bland) – almost as flavorful as black mulberry fruits.  Short but fat berries.  Non-grafted, it roots very easily from cuttings.  Self fertile.

Ichi Ki Kei Jiro Asian Persimmon

(Diospyrus kaki) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Dwarf on Seedling Rootstock, 8′ tall by 10′ wide, self-fertile

One of the hardiest Asian persimmons.  Large fruits are firm and crunchy when ripe, and seedless.  Early ripening.  Great edible landscaping choice – care-free dwarf trees have glossy green leaves, good fall color, and the fruit will hang on the branches after leaf fall for a stunning specimen tree.  Reaches just 8′ tall, spreading up to 10′ wide.  Self fertile.  Zones 6-10  very limited supply

I find sour cherries simply delightful to eat fresh off the tree, despite any reputation otherwise. If too tart for your taste buds, don’t fret; they can be put to a hundred other delicious uses in cooking, baking, drying, preserving, etc. Sour cherries are large and can be easily pitted with any version of standard cherry pitters. Sour cherries share the spotlight with pears as the easiest to produce of the traditional tree fruits in the Midwest without any sprays (though birds can be a problem, eating the crop as soon as it ripens). Sour cherries will even tolerate little to no pruning if that sounds like a daunting task to you. A sour cherry in bloom is a stunning sight, and has a nice natural growth form. Grafted onto Mazzard seedling rootstock, which does better in heavy wet soils than Mahaleb. gallon pot* $16 +tax

Nikitskaya Bordovaya Persimmon

(Diospyros virginiana x Diospyrus kaki) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Dwarf on Seedling Rootstock, Up to 12′ tall, self-fertile

This American/Asian 2nd generation hybrid (non-GMO) is reportedly a back-cross between ‘Rosseyanka’ above and the Kaki Asian persimmons.  It boasts 2 1/2″ sweet, flavorful fruits that are soft when ripe.  It gets its size and taste from its Asian persimmon parents, but it is as cold hardy as an American persimmon.  Suitable for edible landscaping with it’s glossy leaves and attractive fall color.  Reaches just 12′ tall.  Commonly sold under a trademarked name which you can probably guess.  Self-fertile. Zones 5-8

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on OHXF 333, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Late August.  A very early and refined Asian pear with smooth, yellow skin and excellent flavor.  Crisp and juicy!  Asian pears are known to be very easy to care for and have a more spreading growth habit like an apple as compared to the more tall/slender pyramidal form of European pears.
