Northstar Sour Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Dwarf on Mazzard, space 6′-10′ apart, self fertile

July. Morello-type (red flesh, red juice).   A natural dwarf, reaching only 8-10’ at maturity.   Cherries are large and bright red.   ‘Northstar’ is a perfect edible landscaping plant due to it’s small size, low care and beautiful blooms and fruit.   Space 8-10’ apart. Self fertile

Carmine Jewel Sour Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Bush form 6-8′ tall, space 5′-7′ apart, self fertile

August.  (dark red flesh and juice)  We are VERY excited about this newer offering.  It is a natural (non-GMO) hybrid cross between sour cherries and bush cherries, which gives it a very manageable size (6-8′ tall) and great disease and insect resistance. AND it is SWEET – great for fresh eating.  Very productive.  Fruit keeps well on the bush, provided you protect it from birds and neighborhood kids :).  Best flavor is reached a few weeks after the fruits turn red – they’re not really ripe until they are dark red-black.  Self fertile

Honeysweet semi-dwarf Pear

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on OHXF 333, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Late September.  Many nurseries claim that ‘Seckel’ pear is very fireblight resistant; however we lost ours and two other friends in southern IN lost theirs to the 2012 fireblight epidemic.  One of these friends has a ‘Honeysweet’ pear right next to the spot where the ‘Seckel’ was and it went through that blight year just fine.  With that real-world experience, we are now offering ‘Honeysweet’ in place of ‘Seckel’.  It’s fruit is very similar to ‘Seckel’ with buttery-smooth, chewy flesh, tender skin and a lightly spicy, cinnamon flavor; but it is a little larger in size.  Supposedly self-fertile, though it will bear more with a second variety.

Keiffer semi-dwarf Pear

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on OHXF 333, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Late September.  Large golden-yellow fruit with slight russeting and sometimes an orange/red blush.  Incredibly juicy, very course-textured flesh which is where its nickname “sand pear” comes from.  For fresh eating, some folks adore them and others turn up their nose at the gritty flesh.  They have a deep flavor with a hint of astringency which I find refreshing in a world of very mild, sweet pears.  Exceptionally good as dried pears and make good preserves.  Probably the best thing about them is their long-known trait of being able to thrive in almost any conditions–they are pretty much immune to insect and disease troubles.  Some nurseries claim that Keiffer is self-fertile but we have not been able to substantiate that.

Gold Sweet Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Semi-Dwarf on Krymsk 5, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Mid season (mid July).   It is believed that birds will not bother sweet cherries that are fully yellow when ripe, and ‘Gold’ is just that!   Apparently even the blushed varieties like Emperor Francis can be prone to bird predation.  This is an easy to grow large gold cherry that is cold hardy and a good pollinator for other varieties.  Supposedly resistant to brown rot and fruit cracking.  Zone 5-8

Nanking Bush Cherry

(Prunus tomentosa) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  8′ high x 6′ wide, self fertile but pollinates better with two, low maintainance

We hesitated to offer these bush cherries for years, assuming that no-one would want to bother with a hard-seeded fruit too small to pit. However, after interacting with our plants the last few years, we now see their value as a delightful out-of-hand snack and a plant that will thrive under utter neglect. It is one also one of the first things to bloom in the spring, only preceded by our apricot tree.  The glossy, slightly peeling, reddish-brown bark provides interest even in the winter.  The bushes reach 8’ high if unpruned and about 6’ wide. Can grow and even fruit in shade, though more fruit is produced in full sun.  Somewhat self-fertile, but really best with a second plant as a pollinator (these are seedlings so any two plants should work).  Our seedlings have some white- and pink-fruiting individuals in the mix but will be mostly red.

Chestnut Crab semi-dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on M-111, Space 15′-20′ apart, Needs Pollinator

Early Fall.   Edible crab apples are beautiful bloomers as well as disease-resistant fruit producers.  Chestnut Crab is famous for its incredibly sweet but complex 1-1/2” fruits that are red striped over yellow background.  Perfect size for children to munch down if there’s any left for them!   Good for a sweet, no-sugar added applesauce.   White blossoms.   Not the best keeper, about a month.

Arkansas Black dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Dwarf on Bud 9, space 6′-10′ apart (stake), needs pollinator

Early November.   An heirloom apple most often noted for its disease resistance, general hardiness and outstanding keeping abilities.   Very late to ripen, fruits are a gorgeous dark purplish-red and rock hard at picking.  Time in storage softens them a little and the flavor goes towards the sweet side.   Extremely good storage apple–we still have some that are soft but edible in our fridge in May!

Geneva Crabapple semi-dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on M-111, Space 15′-20′ apart, Needs Pollinator

Late Summer.  Great edible landscaping choice – beautiful red flowers and foliage, and 2″ round fruits are red all the way through the flesh.  Their intense color, sharp flavor and slight astringency makes them great for cider, jelly, and fancy preserves. Darren really likes them fresh too, especially paired with cheese.  Hardy variety zones 3-6

Hudson’s Golden Gem semi-dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on M-111, Space 15′-20′ apart, Needs Pollinator

Late October.   Hudson’s is a little more refined in surface appearance than other russet apples—yellow skin with light russeting.   It is noted to have some resistance to diseases, and all russets are slightly more insect resistant due to thicker skin and harder young fruitlets.   This apple is hard, dry and tart at ripening time but mellows out to a sweet pear-like flavor in storage.   Good keeper.

Liberty dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Dwarf on Bud 9, space 6′-10′ apart (stake), needs pollinator

Mid September.   Touted as the most disease-resistant of the PRI apples, this tree has performed remarkably well for us, producing flawless shiny fruit with minimum of care.   Seems to resist insect damage as well as fungal diseases.  We recommend Liberty the most of all our apples.   Fruit is deep purple-red on the sun side and bright green on the shade side, having a flavor like a more sprightly and crisp McIntosh.   Need to thin this variety heavily or fruit size can be small.   A decent keeper in storage.

Mutsu (Crispin) semi-dwarf Apple

-Full Sun–  Semi-Dwarf on M-111, Space 15′-20′ apart, Needs Pollinator

Mid October.   Known for its refreshing crisp and juicy texture.  Yellow delicious-type flavor that has a hint of licorice in the background and much less mealy.   A greenish-yellow when ripe, fruit is large compared to most apples.   Supposedly susceptible to some diseases yet we are offering it because it has been a star performer for us even with neglect!  Actually beats out some of the apples with known disease resistance.   Decent keeper.   [NOTE:  Mutsu is a triploid variety; it does not provide viable pollen, and still needs a pollinator; plant with two other varieties to have fruit on all of them]
